From Scientists to Targets A discovery turns dangerous Rachel, Tolland, Corky, and Norah identify the insertion passage that proves the meteorite was planted. Their scientific disagreement quickly becomes a security crisis when they recognize the discovery threatens the people behind the hoax. They have evidence but no secure route to report it. The camp’s distance from outside help makes ordinary scientific procedures inadequate. A forceful response The hidden team attacks with ice projectiles, injuring Norah, Corky, and Rachel. Tolland understands that the assailants intend to make the death of the witnesses look like an Arctic accident. The dispute over evidence has escalated into a fight for immediate survival.

The Balloon Escape Improvised flight Tolland uses a Mylar weather balloon as a sail, clipping himself and Rachel to its rigging and connecting Corky through the safety tether. The powerful katabatic wind drags all three away from the attackers. The improvisation saves them from immediate capture but sends them racing toward the edge of the ice shelf. Their equipment, intended for observation, becomes a risky means of escape. A fall with consequences The cable eventually snaps after the group clears several snow berms. They slide off the main shelf onto a lower block of ice that is already separating from the glacier. They have escaped one danger only to become stranded above the Arctic Ocean, with the attackers still pursuing them.

The Iceberg Descent A trapped platform Delta-One throws a flashbang into the crevasse beside the lower ice terrace. The blast breaks the precarious slab loose, sending Rachel, Tolland, and Corky down into the sea. They are wet, tangled in tethers, and exposed to rapidly spreading cold. The attackers assume the current and hypothermia will finish what the assault began. An unlikely rescue The survivors climb onto the floating slab, which rises again along the ice face. Rachel uses her ice ax to send a repeated signal through the ice toward underwater listening equipment. The call reaches the U.S.S. Charlotte, whose crew rescues them. Their survival preserves both witnesses and the physical evidence of the insertion.

The Goya Ambush A laboratory stop The group stops at Tolland’s ship so Xavia can test the rock. The results show that its inclusions are compatible with an Earth ocean rock rather than the claimed extraterrestrial specimen. A covert helicopter jams the ship’s communications and attacks. A missile destroys the Coast Guard aircraft, while the investigators are forced below deck. Fighting back Tolland uses the Goya’s tools and layout to incapacitate Delta-Three. Corky escapes in a speedboat, and Rachel helps hold the remaining attacker at bay. The assault transforms the ship from a temporary research stop into a battlefield where each surviving witness must improvise alone or cooperate under pressure.

Rescue at the Vortex A failing escape craft Rachel becomes trapped inside the sinking Triton as its damaged hatch jams and bullets flood the ballast tanks. Tolland tries to free her from outside, while an undersea eruption intensifies the currents around the Goya. The sea’s changing pressure and the damaged submersible leave the pair with no safe route to the surface. A final extraction Rachel breaks the Triton’s damaged dome and escapes into the water. Tolland finds her in the darkness and guides her toward the rising light, while the vortex threatens to pull them under. A Coast Guard Osprey arrives and lifts Rachel, Tolland, and the wounded Corky from the sea. The investigators survive, although the Goya and Pickering do not.
